    Need more education!

Financially indenpendent women in India are rising by the second. What's lacking is the "hang-out zone" for them to discuss financial planning. Guys go to beer bars, women go home to babies. In this increasing gap, guys imbibe a culture of work-and-save-for-the-family with dads giving advise, whereas women have moms who never worked, so no role model, or moms who taught at schools or colleges to make sure the elusive work life balance was never disturbed.

     So what happened?

We grew up, earned money, blew it up on expensive shoes and exotic perfumes. The sense of "second earning member in the family" gives us a misguided sense of security, and we don't realize we need to save for a rainy day, save for the daughter who has her ambitions brimming over, save for the son who may want to tread the unbeaten path...

Think about us when you add the content. We need you more than the guys. And we'll be there - loyally, seeking advise and letting you plan our futures. Trusting you... everyday.

I totally agree with your comments. Financial independence is not just "earning" and bringing in more "spending money" -- it should include being "smart" with your money and planning for the rainy days.

A lot of women, leave the financial planning to the guys -- we need to break out of that mold.

    Re: Need more education!

Like the way you are thinking Rachna.

This topic actually is lot more complex then it looks at surface. Just a few key points which really impact the dynamics in relationship and actual scenarios-

    * How is the money managed in general in the house/marriage. Is it my money/your money or Our money.

    * Who is the controlling party for the major decisions like House Purchase & Retirement Plan.

    * Do women actually control what they earn or just make their personal purchases and leave rest to the spouse?

    * How much does each party contribute to common expenses?

    * Do Wife Husband have individual bank accounts, credit cars, retirement accounts or just one big pot?

    * Are husband wife earning similar amounts? If not how it impacts the situation?

    Re: Need more education!

from above thr. is also a point that not education but also self dependent is very imp. to women

More and more women should develop self-drive and surge forward to realize their potential and play important roles in the society.

I agree that even today in this corporate world there are men who cannot tolerate the rapid rise of women in their career and so many men even in today’s world cannot work for a lady boss. But women who have come from nowhere have grown to become somebody in their world, because of their own self-drive. Such women are still only exceptions on date. When more and more women come forward in working towards a greater cause, all other women-related issues like reservations, concessions and special privileges will become redundant.

I can think of an eg. i.e ..Basmati rice is available, plenty of fresh vegetables, mint and spices are lying in the kitchen. Unless we learn the recipe and take efforts to cook tasty ‘vegetable biriyani’, all the raw materials are a waste. What is the pride in simply possessing all the ingredients? We have so much potential, energy, fire, education and dreams. Let’s make a full use of all the ingredients and experience the aromatic biriyani called life!
Women, who have pursued their dreams, have proved that sky isn’t the limit. Clearly in most of the lives of successful women, self-determination has been the greatest contributor.

    Re: Need more education!

Very well said Rachana.Women of today is in far better position than women of yesteryears. But a question that needs to be answered  is - are most women  in india shying away from the responsibility of proactive financial planning and investing ? or is it pure lack of knowledge .

Today  most women  are educated and also earning in the urban setting. Yet the investment levels of women much poorer than the  men . And also the risk quotient women are ready to expose themselves to.

Is it a mindset or a comfort zone , from which the indian women need to break free from ? This needs pondering over .
